Adult Volunteers - We need you!
Over 20? Seeking a new challenge? Would you like to develop skills, leadership qualities and gain qualifications too?
At 55 (Woodford & Bramhall) Squadron Air Cadets, we constantly assess our past achievements, implement changes to meet the challenges of today and make plans for the future. And a huge part of that planning is you. As the backbone of our organisation we're always on the look out for high-calibre individuals to become volunteers, helping to run the activities that play such an important role in the lives of our young members.
All kinds of people make up our volunteer staff, coming from a range of backgrounds and interests. Obviously if you have direct experience of working
with young people, or any relevant skills such as flying or gliding, you would be particularly welcome. These aren't essential though, as we will train and
support you at every stage.
That said, you'll have some personal qualities that are essential, such as patience, maturity and responsibility along with an understanding of young
people and their needs. You needn't be an athlete, but a good level of physical fitness also helps to ensure you can keep up with the cadets!
Are you Officer or SNCO material?
We rely on our volunteers to help us operate as effectively as possible. Being well organised is an obvious must, ideally with good managerial and
administrative skills, and an ability to listen to problems and deal with them tactfully and appropriately.
Really show your skills in these areas and you could end up taking on more responsibility and moving up through the ranks as an officer or senior
non-commissioned officer (SNCO). Of course, first you have to join as a Civilian Instructor and then have selection interviews at Wing HQs and Regional HQs but we guide you through that…if you have the potential then we’ll spot it!

The Air Training Corps (ATC) needs high calibre adult volunteers to run its activities. Flying, climbing, shooting, football and netball are just a taste of the activities offered by the Air Cadets to young people aged 13-20. But to deliver this exciting programme - and our respected academic syllabus - we need adult volunteers from all walks of life.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Can I Help?
Adult Volunteers play a vital role in all aspects of cadet life, whether organising activities, encouraging and educating cadets or helping the squadron run smoothly.
Who Can Become an Adult Volunteer?
We welcome all responsible adults - male or female - from all social backgrounds, cultures and religions. You do not need to have any prior military experience. Minimum age to volunteer is 20 years old. Any training you may require, or feel you need will be provided.
What Will I Get Out of It?
You can take part in activities you couldn't do elsewhere and gain nationally recognized qualifications at the same time. Our volunteers tell us they gain a huge sense of achievement from helping young people realise their potential.
Are There Different Levels of Involvement?
Most adult staff join as Civilian Instructors. Some move on to uniformed service as a Sergeant (ATC) or Commissioned RAF VR(T) Officer. Each squadron also has a Civilian Committee, which supports the squadron in many important ways, such as fundraising and recruitment. You choose your level of involvement!
How Much Time Will I Need To Give?
Civilian Instructors and Civilian Committee members give as much or as little time as they can manage. Uniformed staff are expected to give a minimum commitment of 12 hours per month.
Do I Need Any Qualifications?
Everyone has a skill they can put to good use! All you need is enthusiasm and the ability to communicate with young people. If you have professional skills even better! The Squadron holds a lot of Training information/resources to help support you.
Are There Opportunities For My Own Development?
We will encourage you to develop your existing talents, learn new skills and gain nationally recognized qualifications such as NVQ certificates, Mountain Leaders, First Aid and glider instructor qualifications.
Sounds Interesting?
If this sounds the thing for you or you would like more information then the next step is to come and visit us on one of our parade nights (Mondays & Thursdays 7pm - 9.30pm)
Alternatively, you can apply on the national RAF Air cadets website.
